What a glorious performance
Maybe you don’t know the lighthouse at Rubjerg Knude, however today it’s exactly two years since a piece of ingenuity without much comparison, was executed in Danmark.
A performance in good engineering and craftmanship.
To move a lighthouse
Let’s look back to 2019. In Northern Jutland where the tough weather conditions form the harsh landscape, the old lighthouse at Rubjerg Knude was close to become another victim of nature. It was so close to the cliff that eventually it would collapse into the ocean.
Either it had to be torn down, or it had to be moved.
After investigations, money was found and the move could take place. The lighthouse had to be moved 60-80 m further back into open land.
A plan of putting the lighthouse on “roller skates” and sliding it slowly to the new place, was created.
Local master builder Kjeld Pedersen fra Lønstrup, began preparations in august 2019. The process lasted two months abnd in October they were ready to do the move. which took place on October 22nd.
The lighthouse weighs more than 700 tons and had to be moved by reinforcing the foundation with iron and concrete, attach skates and slide it backwards on a premade trail by means of jacks and hydraulics.
All day the event was live streamed on various media. The weather was ok, though a bit windyand I sat – like thousands of others – glued to my pc to see it all.
Would the lighthouse fall down. Would it crumble and implode? Both the tension and excitement among the many people involved on the site could almost be felt. It took many hours to move the lighthouse, but they succeeded without any great challenges.
The move was originally expected to give the lighthouse another 40 years to live, however new calculations has decreased this to 20 years.
No matter what will happen, you can only honour the team behind this fantastic performance.
